Kirk Cousins is in elite company when it comes to this one NFL stat.
Since 2015 there’s been a constant, circular slap fight of pro and anti-Cousins arguments. At this point, we could all write a doctoral dissertation on the worth of a quarterback in the modern NFL, relative to salary cap limitations.
To argue my points and really pwn people on the internet, I like to have cold hard facts and stats on my side. Because of this, I spend an inordinate amount of time Googling ‘Kirk Cousins stats’ in the hopes that somebody at work is like “Kurt Cousins sucks bro!”
Anyway, during my search for new ammo to slam Kirk-haters I stumbled across this beauty from Pro Football Reference.
What does it mean in its full context? I don’t know. But it’s interesting nonetheless.
For his career, Kirk Cousins averages 7.8 yards per pass attempt.
How does that compare to other quarterbacks throughout history?
There are 11 quarterbacks ahead of Kirk Cousins on the career YPA list. Six of those quarterbacks are in the Hall of Fame. Four of the other quarterbacks are Aaron Rodgers (lock for Hall of Fame), Ben Roethlisberger (lock for Hall of Fame), Russell Wilson (will probably be in Hall of Fame) and Tony Romo (with playoff success could have been a Hall of Fame candidate).
Just below Kirk on this list are Johnny Unitas and Phillip Rivers.
If we look at the Adjusted Yards per Attempt List Kirk is on the invite list for an even better party.
(and what exactly is that?)
AY/A - adjusted yards per passing attempt: (pass yards + 20*(pass TD) - 45*(interceptions thrown))/(passing attempts). This stat was introduced, and the reasoning behind it thoroughly explained in a book called The Hidden Game of Football, by Bob Carroll, Pete Palmer, and John Thorn. Note that we are now using 20 yards per TD instead of 10, because of research by Chase Stuart at the p-f-r blog.
So where does Kirk rank here?
- Aaron Rodgers
- Russell Wilson
- Otto Graham
- Steve Young
- Tony Romo
- Tom Brady
- Ben Roethlisberger
- Phillip Rivers
- Peyton Manning
- Kurt Warner
- Kirk Cousins
- Drew Brees
- Matt Ryan
- Joe Montana
In conclusion, I think this is settled. Kirk Cousins is elite and the Redskins should give him a tractor trailer full of cash in the next two weeks.
